BED THREE

4 March 2016

first sowings marked out but none survived!

4 May 2016 - potatoes in seven weeks late.  Does that matter?

3 June 2016 - fennel expanding and courgette just planted

fennel tastes lovely - like aniseed

21 June 2016 - the potato plants are trying to escape

The red orach looks very bright when the sun shines through the leaves

19 July 2016
Miss Savages' class harvest the potatoes.  There were red skinned Rudolph and white skinned Rocket varieties.  The children took it in turns to cut back the foliage and dig to find the treasure..

In the woods the bounty was counted and in all there were 71 potatoes!

The plan now is to cook potato wedges on Thursday just before breaking up for the summer holidays.

I didn't know what was in the beds to start with - in December they were all covered with weeds but this dahlia survived my digging and sprouted up fill of life this year with perfect maroon flowers.

4 May 2016 - there were some foxgloves at one end and I scattered wild flower seeds over the rest of the bed

POND

but look at the difference on the 3rd of June

6 July 2016 - the wild grasses and flowers are thriving around the edges of the pond

12 September 2016.   The bull rushes had gone crazy and were taking over, with lots of weed as well there was little water to be seen and that's not great for the wildlife so I helped Becky do a bit of clearing.  She was prepared for jumping in and battling in the mud and I hate to admit I wasn't so did the easier bits around the edges.  It looks a lot clearer now and there is space for more of the smaller plants and creatures to thrive.

WILLOW TUNNEL

18 March 2016 - Carrie taught Becky and I how to make a willow tunnel.  We began by bending over pairs of long willow branches and binding them in the middle to make the archway and then either side of each branch two more were planted and woven into the structure.  It's great watching it take shape and the children couldn't wait to run through it.
8 April - It wasn't long before little shoots were growing.
3 June - and then big shoots!

6 July 2016 - in need of a haircut

a shady spot for the summer

19th July 2016 - Becky trimmed the top which will encourage the sides to send out shoots then these can be woven in when they are long enough.
